Not really a tour, just a weekend away

Post by Cornishman » Tue Aug 07, 2018 12:25 pm

I decided to risk the heatwave and headed into the hills for a few days. I rode south east through the Limousin, eastern Dordogne and Correze into the Cantal, spent a day touring around the Avyeron and Monts de Cantal before returning via Tulle and Saint Yriex de Perche. I covered about 1000 km over the three days and the majority of those were on great motorcycling roads. I stayed two nights on a well shaded comfortable campsite and it was great to under canvas for the first time this year.

Thanks for posting up your trip. Nice pics. We would do the same but presently bike-less while we try to sort out the electrics. As you say great roads in that area, and I suspect not many tourists either. How are you finding the 80km limit? Quite a lot of drivers seem to be following it; but there are also the few loonies who get right up your rear. It is not the speed they need to control but their ability to judge distance and observe what is happening ahead. Maybe I should post this on the having a bitch section!
Anyway, glad someone is out there doing the two wheels on tarmac is best game.

I’ve mixed feelings about the 80kmh limit. For a lot of my trip I was on roads where 80 was plenty but at other times I spent too much time concentrating on my speed and at 80 on the open road it’s too easy to let your concentration wander. I came across one prat in a metallic grey van wh blocked me when I could have overtaken him, slowed down to 70 on a stretch of road that I couldn’t pass him on then, once I was in front came hammering up right behind me at 120-130 kmh. I really don’t know what his problem was. I guess the rumours that the Correze aren’t keen on enforcing the limit as I followed an artic at over 110kmh through a long dip. Even once I’d passed him he stayed in my mirrors for a long time. It was just nice to be out on the bike with places to go and things to see. I hope you get the electrics fixed before too long.

Yes it is Murat, I must stop there sometime. It was a significant junction on my trip because it was one of the places that I crossed the holiday traffic, near Brive and Tulle were the other places. It’s so strange after hours of enjoying deserted roads to come across a crowded one then to leave it as quickly as it appeared.

A quieter moment.

All those hills and not a sheep in sight! Unfortunately the meet ups have disappeared, a shame as I always enjoyed them, even when I had to use the little Suzuki to get there.

Great pics David - glad you enjoyed the trip. My OH mentioned the other day that there havent been BCF meets for a long time. I guess we are all too few and scattered now to justify it.

The weather is calming down and should be good for biking so perhaps soon. Like most folks I've got family over at pres and only done short runs which have been like riding into a giant hairdryer.
