French driving licence

Post by Andrew » Mon May 06, 2019 7:55 am

Perhaps collective wisdom could help me out here. My French driving has a marked expiry date (4b, on the front) of 11.10.2018, this is only 5 years after the issue date. I thought French licences were good for 15 years on category A thru B. I didn't think I had to renew the card itself (photo for instance) every 5 years, only for address changes and the like.

I do have additional categories (C,D etc,) which expire, as expected, 11.10.2018 but that doesn't effect cats A and B.

I wasn't going to bother renewing just for the additional categories but am not sure if I have to renew my licence now anyway because of that 4b date. I'm sure I'm good to drive etc but I am confused about that expiry date.

Do you reckon there was a mistake made when issuing my licence or do you reckon I do need to renew it?

I just checked mine, issued last year, expires 2033 so it's a 15 year one - strange, I don't recall having the option to apply for either a 5 year or 15 year licence - it just got dished out.

Is it your first French one? Because I've read suggestion that the first is 5 years and 15 thereafter. Or maybe it's a rule change since mine (and wizzard's) was issued and now - used to be 5 and now it's 15. Dunno.

Renewal doesn't appear to be ANTS thing either (not that I could quickly see amyway) so paperwork at the prefecture.

Renewal is via ANTS.

Yes, you're right, it is. Once I read through the 'help' descriptions, I saw that renewal was a "fabrication d'un titre de permis de conduire" and then you select 'end of validity' as your reason (motif).

My comprehension of French bureaucracy is often hampered not only my limited languages skills and failure to understand how the system works, but also by the fact I don't even know exactly what they're asking/saying when I DO understand the words! Who'd have thought that 'fabrication' in this context included renewal!

I think I may have expired by then

So maybe the rules changed between Oct 2013 (when mine was issued) and Feb 2016 (when ShovelHead's was issued)

I'm just going to go through the ANTS system to renew mine, and I'm going to renew my C & D categories too, may as well, it's only a doctor's cert that's needed.

Edit: jeez, may not bother with those extra categories now, the nearest doc that'll do the test is 60km away! Dunno if I can be bothered.
